KICKING HORSE

Kicking Horse River Bridge Foundation Piles

Henry Foundation Drilling Inc. (HFDI) was contracted by Copcan to supply and install driven steel pipe piles for the Kicking Horse River Bridge project near Golden, BC.

The project required specialized bridge foundation construction beside the existing structure and within a sensitive river environment. HFDI delivered the equipment, technical expertise and experienced crew required to complete the pile installation safely and efficiently.

Driven Steel Pipe Pile Installation

HFDI supplied and installed 33 driven steel pipe piles for the new bridge foundations.

The steel piles ranged from approximately 18 to 31 metres in length. Each pile measured 30 inches in diameter with a wall thickness of 0.625 inches.

Our scope included:

  • Supply of all permanent steel pipe piles

  • Mobilization of specialized pile-driving equipment

  • Installation of 33 driven steel piles

  • Vibration monitoring near the existing bridge

  • Coordination with the general contractor

  • Safe operation around overhead restrictions and changing river conditions

Each stage of the pile-driving process was carefully planned to meet the project’s technical, environmental and safety requirements.

Foundation Work Beside the Existing Bridge

Working close to the existing Kicking Horse River Bridge created several technical and logistical challenges.

Pile-driving operations required careful vibration monitoring to ensure established limits were not exceeded. Protecting the existing structure remained a priority throughout the foundation installation.

The river environment also introduced changing water levels and site conditions. Our crew coordinated pile-driving activities around the available working windows to maintain safe access and operational efficiency.

Overhead obstacles added another layer of complexity to the positioning and operation of the crane and pile-driving equipment. Detailed planning and experienced equipment operation allowed the work to proceed safely within the restricted site.

Environmental and Safety Considerations

Foundation construction beside the Kicking Horse River required close attention to environmental protection and job-site safety.

HFDI coordinated its operations to reduce risk around the waterway while maintaining compliance with the project’s safety procedures. Equipment movements, pile positioning and installation activities were carefully managed throughout the work.

Our experienced team adapted to changing site conditions while continuing to meet the project schedule and installation requirements.

Successful Project Completion

The Kicking Horse River Bridge foundation pile installation was completed successfully and on schedule.

Strong coordination between Henry Foundation Drilling and Copcan supported an efficient workflow from mobilization through completion. Despite the restricted working area, vibration limitations, overhead obstacles and river conditions, all pile-driving work was completed safely and effectively.

This project demonstrates HFDI’s ability to deliver complex deep foundation and driven pile solutions for bridge and infrastructure projects throughout British Columbia.
