TAPPEN BRIDGES
Tappen Bridges Foundation and Piling Project
Tappen, British Columbia | 2023–2025
Henry Foundation Drilling Inc. (HFDI) completed specialized deep foundation and temporary shoring work for multiple bridge structures in Tappen, BC.
Working with Emil Anderson Construction Inc., our team installed driven piles, sheet piles and temporary shoring systems to support the eastbound and westbound bridges and the Tappen Creek Bridge. The multi-year project required careful coordination around traffic, overhead utilities, environmental requirements and sensitive work areas.
Driven Pile Installation for Multiple Bridges
HFDI installed a total of 51 driven piles across the Tappen bridge project:
36 driven piles for the eastbound and westbound bridges
15 driven piles for the Tappen Creek Bridge
Sheet piles for temporary earth retention and support
Temporary shoring for foundation construction activities
Our scope included pile installation, drilling cleanouts and the installation of temporary support systems required for the bridge foundations.
Each element was installed according to the project specifications while maintaining a strong focus on safety, accuracy and efficient site operations.
Specialized Foundation Equipment
The project required several types of heavy foundation construction equipment to complete the work safely and efficiently.
HFDI used Kobelco CK1100 crawler cranes for lifting and pile-driving operations, BG30 drilling rigs for pile cleanouts and an RTG piling rig for specialized installation work.
Using the right equipment for each phase allowed our team to adapt to changing site conditions and complete the foundation and shoring work within the required tolerances.
Working Around Overhead Utilities
Significant overhead utilities created restricted operating conditions for cranes, drilling rigs and pile-driving equipment.
Equipment positioning and movement required detailed planning to maintain safe clearances. Our experienced operators coordinated closely with the project team to perform the work safely without compromising installation accuracy or productivity.
Environmental and Noise Requirements
The Tappen Bridges project was completed under strict environmental and noise-control requirements.
Pile-driving operations using vibratory hammers near sensitive areas required careful planning, monitoring and coordination. Our crews followed the project’s environmental procedures while adapting work activities to the permitted operating conditions.
These measures helped reduce disruption while allowing the driven pile and temporary shoring work to progress efficiently.
Traffic and Site Coordination
Completing foundation construction around active transportation infrastructure required continuous coordination with the project’s traffic management plans.
HFDI scheduled equipment movements and piling activities around the available working areas and operational windows. Close communication between our team and Emil Anderson Construction supported a safe and organized workflow throughout the project.
Successful Completion of the Tappen Bridges Project
After several years of foundation and piling work, the Tappen Bridges project was successfully completed on time and according to specification.
Strong collaboration with Emil Anderson Construction and the professionalism of HFDI’s crews were essential to overcoming the site’s overhead restrictions, environmental requirements, noise controls and traffic-management challenges.
